Telcel Infinitum Digital Village Inaugurated in Mexico City's Zocalo Square.

Telcel Infinitum Digital Village, the biggest digital inclusion event in the world, was inaugurated in Mexico City's Zocalo Square and for the fourth year running it will offer visitors, free of charge, the experience of connectivity and access to contents in the fields of education, employment, technology, entrepreneurship, cyber-security, the environment, health, and human development, through an extensive range of workshops, activities, courses, and conferences.
Telcel Infinitum Digital Village is a unique event, which for 22 days will offer a broad range of educational activities, 30 workshops, and 89 master classes, as well as the experience of online training and entrepreneurship, catering to the learning needs of all users and ensuring that the knowledge that they acquire and develop offers them access to better academic prospects, job opportunities, and higher living standards.
After the inaugural visit, Mr. Carlos Slim Domit, chairman of the Board of Administration at América Móvil, declared: "Today, with the Aprende platform we are able to acquire knowledge online free of charge, and Digital Village is a reflection of that. Our goal is to ensure that with the use of technology, the new era of digital inclusion will be more effective.
Mr. Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, secretary of Communications and Transportation, declared that the Digital Village was a showcase of high technology developed by Mexicans, which was cause for pride and celebration. He added that this event contemplated some level of digital inclusion for almost everyone in society.
Meanwhile, Mr. Aurelio Nuño, secretary of Public Education, declared: "In the 20th century, the only way in which Mexico will be a successful country with the capacity to compete, to develop comprehensively, and to deal with other countries on equal terms, in addition to overcoming its own barriers of poverty and inequality, is by means of a solid educational project" that must necessarily incorporate digital inclusion.
Finally, Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera stressed that "Digital Village is the biggest digital inclusion event in the world. It currently has four certified Guinness World Records for its promotion and execution, which enables the coexistence of people of all ages, social classes, and occupations, making Digital Village a true example from Mexico to the world."
Digital Village will include the participation of world-class speakers such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; Neil Harbisson, the first cyber-human; Ime Archibong, director of Product Alliances at Facebook; Gary Davis, global vice president of Consumer Marketing at Intel Security; Timothy Chou, president of Oracle On Demand; former NASA astronaut José Hernández, and A.K. Pradeep, founder of Neurofocus.
The contents of the Digital Village will be available online at www.aldeadigitalmx.com, enabling users anywhere in the world to access streaming broadcasts of conferences, online courses offered free of charge on the Aprende.org (Learn) and Train for Work educational platforms, as well as social media events on the @AldeaDigital Twitter account.
Meanwhile, people who visit the 21,000-square meter exhibition areas in Mexico City's Zócalo Square will have access to a 100 Gigabytes per second connection based on Infinitum broadband and on Telcel's 4GLTE network, making this the fastest connection at any event of this nature around the world.
Given the importance of business entrepreneurship for Mexico's future and economic growth, the Digital Village will include an Entrepreneurs' Pavilion, a unique experience for those who wish to start a business using digital tools.
Telcel Infinitum Digital Village is part of the Telmex-Carlos Slim Foundation Program for Digital Culture and Education, a project that seeks to reduce the digital gap throughout the country, by offering the population access to digital know-how and technology completely free of charge.

The Telcel Infinitum Digital Village came to a conclusion in Mexico City's Zocalo Square with the participation of 420,848 people from 15 July to 5 August, enabling it to enter the Guinness Book of Records once again as the biggest digital inclusion event in the world.
The 2016 Edition of the Digital Village also obtained three more records: Aprende.org became the platform with educational content offered completely free of charge with the greatest number of people registered; the Soumaya Museum received the highest number of virtual visits; and Build your City received this recognition for the greatest number of children and teenagers taking part in the design of public spaces.
After the Guinness World Records team verified the attendant count and ascertained that it maintained its global position as the world's biggest digital inclusion event, this international organization awarded the corresponding certificate to the Telcel Infinitum Digital Village.
Here are some notable milestones of the 2016 Edition of the Digital Village:
- People ranging from three to 87 years old and from all different socioeconomic levels took part in the 30 workshops included in the event, irrespective of their level of digital know-how. These attendants took part in educational workshop on topics ranging from elementary computer use to robotics and 3-D programming. With this educational content, hundreds of thousands of people received training in topics including entrepreneurship, job seeking, education, technology, culture, health, and human development.
- The Aprende.org open, no-cost educational platform, which was recently launched by the Carlos Slim Foundation, makes modern, world-class educational content available to everyone by means of mobile or fixed devices. This content is offered free of any access charge to active users of Telcel mobile telephony and Infinitum broadband. This was one of the most successful initiatives at the Digital Village, and it obtained the Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people connected to an educational platform over an eight-hour period.
- The Digital Village obtained the Guinness World Record for the greatest number of Virtual Reality visits to the Soumaya Museum. Virtual Reality is a technology that adds virtual objects to reality, enabling them to become a platform to view 3-D models.
- It also obtained a Guinness World Record for the greatest number of children and teenagers taking part in the design of public spaces, in the Build your City workshop.
- A total 107 renowned national and international speakers took part in the Digital Village forum, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozkniak; Neil Harbisson, the first cyber-human; former NASA astronaut José Hernández, and former US Secretary of the Treasury Rosie Rios, as well as representatives of Facebook, Intel, Qualcomm, MIT, Oracle, TELMEX, and UNAM, among other companies and institutions.
- Visitors to this edition of the Digital Village came from all 32 states of the Mexican Republic, as well as from other countries such as the United States, Canada, France, China, and Nigeria.
- The Digital Village was made possible by the efforts and the work carried out by 3,245 people.
