The Carlos Slim Foundation signed an agreement with Autism Speaks to provide online information and tools in Spanish to treat autism.
New York, NY and Mexico City, 27 July 2015.
The Carlos Slim Foundation has partnered with Autism Speaks, leading organization in the world dedicated to analyze the causes, prevention, treatment and possible cure for autism. The Foundation will translate into the Spanish language information, tools and resources about autism, offering them to the Spanish speaking population, online and free of cost.
Materials will include over 40 kits of Autism Speaks tools, covering the initial signs of autism in children but also those in adults suffering from the ailment. Published materials will include results of high quality scientific research and will be designed in an easy to use format.
Autism affects around 70 million persons around the world. The ailment may interfere with verbal and non-verbal communication, limit social interaction and incite defying behavior. Even if the causes of this disorder are not yet clear, autism can be diagnosed in patients 18 to 24 months of age. There is a lack of available services to treat autism in the Hispanic population in the United States, Mexico and Latin America. The challenge will be faced by this new partnership that aims to provide Spanish language materials to raise awareness about autism, reduce stigmas and guide families in search of diagnosis and services.
The Spanish autism toolkits will be available in the Carlos Slim Foundation website dedicated to communicate about health education: ClikiSalud.net. They will also be available in the Autism Speaks website: autismspeaks.org
The partnership between Autism Speaks and the Carlos Slim Foundation is an important step to improve access to educational tools and information about autism amongst the Spanish speaking populations in the United States, Mexico and Latin America.
